Men's Cup
Churchill's
Novice A crew easily accounted for Wolfson in the opening round, and
then beat Jesus soundly in round 2. The quarter-final match-up with
CCAT produced another strong Churchill victory. The semi-final contest
with Selwyn was as exciting as it was controvesial. Selwyn slewed
off their station on the start, and the crews' blades clashed heavily.
Churchill, believing the race would be stopped, momentarily easied,
but as Selwyn carried on, it became clear that there wasn't going
to be a restart. Churchill resumed a length and a half down, and,
after a great row, cut the deficit to a length at the finish. Churchill
protested that the incident at the start had unfairly hampered their
progress, and the officials initially disqualified Selwyn, and then
reconsidered and ordered a rerow. Second time around, Churchill won
an incident-free race convincingly by two lengths. The final against
LMBC was delayed as darkness fell, and was held on the Tuesday. In
a high quality contest between the two evenly matched crews, LMBC
won by one length.

Churchill Novice B crew scored a terrific come-from-behind win over
CCAT B, and then dominated Sidney Sussex B in round 2. They raced
stroke for stroke with Jesus B in the quarter-finals before Jesus
pushed clear for the victory. Churchill Novice C beat Peterhouse B
in the first round, but lost to 1st & 3rd B in round 2. Novice
D scored a comical victory over Trinity Hall C in round 1. Trinity
Hall made a good start and pulled ahead, but then their cox veered
across the river into D's path. The marshals blew whistles to tell
Trinity Hall's cox to get back on his side of the river, but the Trinity
Hall rowers mistook this for a signal that they had crossed the finish
line. They easied and began to celebrate until Novice D crashed into
their stern. Trinity Hall was disqualified. Novice D were pipped at
the finish by LMBC D in round 2.
