Fairbairns Cup
(Nov. 29th & 30th '01)
Churchill
Crews excelled in Fairbairns this year with both Novices and Seniors
finishing well up the league table of colleges.
Senior Men:
The men's 1st boat finished an excellent 11th with a time of 13mins58secs.
They were the 6th Cambridge college boat! Nice one!
Men's 2nd boat finished 36th with a time of 15mins39secs.
Senior Women:
The women's 1st IV came 10th out of 20 with a time of 13mins20secs.
Women's 2nd IV came 16th with a time of 13mins38secs.
The women's '1st VIII' (seniors with a few novices sprinkled in!) came
31st in the VIII's division with a time of 18mins29secs. A fair result
considering the lack of experience in the crew-some of the crew having
never done a head race before let alone a full Fairbairns course!
Novice Men:
The men's novice A crew kicked ass and finished 11th out of more than
70 crews with a time of 10mins35secs. Men's novice B finished as the
6th fastest B boat (47th overall) with a time of 12mins6secs. Not to
be out done novice C did fantastically too and finished the 8th fastest
C boat and 54th overall,with a time of 12mins42secs.
Novice Women:
Churchill's novice women crew finished joint 13th overall beating over
50 other crews. They also creamed some of the men's crews with a time
of 12mins32secs! Go girls!

Clare Sprints Novice
Regatta (Nov. 22nd - 24th '01)
Women:
The novice women's crew rowed well to beat off Cauis A in the first
round of the Cup competition. They were unlucky to be beaten in the
2nd round by Jesus A. Photo's here.
Men: Novice A men beat Queen's B easily in the first round but
were very unfortunate to be disqualified in the 2nd round. The crew
went a bit wonky after a nasty crab was caught and although Churchill
were well in the lead by this time and in no way impeded Sidney Sussex
A, the rules state that if you cross into another crews space then you
must be disqualified. See the photo of the crew racing here
to see how far they were in front of Sidney only half way down the
reach!
Novice B beat LMBC C in the first round but were knocked out of the
competition in the 2nd round by Magdalene B. Novice C were knocked out
by Downing D in the first round.
Final results:
Women's Cup: LMBC
Women's Plate: Cauis B
Men's Cup: LMBC A
Men's Plate: Selwyn B

Head of the River
Fours (Nov. 10th '01)
CCBC's men's
and women's 1st and 2nd crews travelled to London to race the 4 mile
Mortlake to Putney (reverse of varsity boat race course) Head of the
River Fours race. The weather was ideal without too much wind to make
the water choppy and without rain to chill the rowers before they raced.
For full results
to see how we compared with other Cambridge crews and for more information
about the race check out the Head of the River Fours web
site.
Break down of

Mmmm...something smell's good in this bag!
I'm sooo hungry after all that rowing - maybe I could
catch a few flies!

Lent
Head to Head (Jan 26th '02)
Men's
1st came an admirable 4th in Division 1, with a time of 9mins 2secs
for the first Head piece and only 2 mins more for the second Head piece.
They were beaten only by Emma, Christ's and Jesus.
Men's 2nd and 3rd boats are currently working a squad system so crews
aren't set yet so a crew made up from the squad was entered as the 2nd
boat. The crew acheived a time of 10mins 23secs for the first leg and
12mins 42 secs for the 2nd leg. After a close look at Men's 4th time
it was obvious something was a bit amiss with the crew somehow managing
to take 42 mins to row the first leg!!! After a few words with the organisers,
the mistake was rectified and the crews time was corrected to12 mins
for the first leg and 13 mins 2 secs for the second leg resulting in
the crew winning their division - pennants all round for 4th boat!
The
women's 1st boat welcomed 4 new seniors into the crew this term and
they have started the term well coming 6th in the women's first division
with a time of 10mins 29secs for the first leg and then going against
the tide on the 2nd leg they rowed the course in a time of 14mins and
44 secs.

Robinson
Head (Feb 8th '02)
The
second big race of the term was a time to check our crews progress against
the other college's and allow Pete Convey to start making his Bumps
predictions!
Men's 1st were missing a few of the full Bumps crew but rowed a great
race to finish 11th overall with a time of 9mins and 1 sec. (1 second
off their first leg Head to Head time) Still unbeaten by Robinson and
Clare (two crews set to feature heavily in Churchill Men's 1st's Bump)
this term, fingers are crossed for a successful Bumps.
Men's 2nd and 3rd also performed well finishing 25th and 26th respectively
and only 1second apart!?
The women's first crew rowed the 2200m course in 11mins and 1 second
- a great performance.

Bumps
getting on Race (Feb 22nd '02)
Churchill
had two crews trying to 'Get On' to the 2002 Lent Bumps - Men's 3rd
and 4th. The weather wasn't ideal with gusting winds ready to catch
crews out. However, excellent rowing from Men's 3rd secured them a position
as the 2nd fastest men's crew to get on but an unfortunate sequence
of events in the last 50 metres of the race just pushed Men's 4th out
of the top 10 - bad luck guys - but watch out for them in the May's!
Men's 3rd start 3 from the bottom of the 4th division and will be chasing
Christ's IV and will be chased by Magdalene II. Could be a good Bumps
for them - good luck!

Women's VIII's
Head of the River (Mar. 9th '02)
Unfortunately
due to high winds the women's Head of the River was cancelled this year.
But ever determined to put their training to use, our crew tried a new
sport - rowing on the grass!

Men's VIII's Head of the River (Mar 23rd '02)
Christ's
came top out of the Cambridge colleges, coming a credible 74th. Downing
were next, 1.85 seconds behind in 81st. Then a bit of a gap to Goldie
(dev squad) in 99th. Caius in 154th. Emma 163rd. Black Prince 180th.
FAT 193rd. Maggie 205th. Clare 243rd. Catz 259th. Binson 261st. Kings'
262nd. Jesus 268th. Wolfson 273rd. Emma 2 289th. Churchill 316th.
Girton 352nd. Corpus 360th. Clare 2 376th. Black Prince 2 382nd. CCAT
399th.
Churchill's
men suffered an unfortunate seat breaking crab within the first half
mile of the course which slowed their progress significantly, but they
had a lot of fun and all said it was a good experience to row in such
a big race.

Nine's Regatta
(May 26th '02)
The Nine's regatta
is run by The Cambridge '99 Rowing Club. It is a side-by-side knock-out
competition from the top of the reach to Peter's Posts.
The women's 1st
boat competed: Here's a report of how they got on, by Zoe Jones
In the first race
of the cup Churchill ladies first boat were up against Christs, rivals
from last May term. After a shakey start, with Christs pulling 1/3 of
a length ahead, we strode into our rhythym and were starting to row
through them before they hit the insdie of the bend at the railway bridge.
They used the corner to full adavantage and began to pull away. Once
we rounded the corner they never gained ground but we never pulled it
back on them either.
This put is in
the plate competition, where we were facing Girton who had had excellent
results all lent term. Our coach told us to expect a tough race and
he was right. Again our opposition took it away from us at the start
but we moved quickly up on them, and with some excellent coxing and
calls from Jenny, we reached the bend before Girton. We then powered
it home off the bridge, not allowing Girton to use their advantage of
the inside bend, and winning by 3/4 of a length.
In the final of
the plate we were up against Pembroke who lie 5 places ahead of us in
the first division. This time though we had the advantage of the inside
bend at the railway bridge and were on a high from our previous victory.
We had an absolutely flying start, and our best stride out. Pembroke
moved up 1/3 length immediately though, and whilst we didn't let go
of them, we didn't manage to start rowing through them.At the bridge
we put in a surge of power to take full advantage of the inside line.
Pembroke did some clever coxing of their own however, forcing Jenny
to take a slightly tighter line than she'd have liked. Our sprint for
the finish was very close though, with their cox having to push them
the whole way to guarantee them victory. The final was by far our best
row of the day though, and put a smile on everyone's face even in the
midst of exams!
Cam Head to Head (May 12th '02)
The Cam Head to
Head is organised by the City of Cambridge Rowing Club. The race was
held over two legs, first downstream and then upstream, between the
top finish and the motorway bridge (2800 metres) on the Cam.
